Layer 01
Ice & water barrier
A self-sealing waterproof membrane in the most leak-prone spots: the eaves, valleys, and around chimneys and vents. It seals around every nail and stops water that backs up in heavy rain.
Layer 02
Underlayment
A water-resistant sheet over the whole roof deck. If wind-driven rain gets past the shingles, it keeps the water off the wood.
Layer 03
Starter shingles
A strip with a built-in sealant line that goes along the roof's edges first. It bonds down the first row of shingles so wind can't get under the edge.
Layer 04
Shingles
The layer you see. Overlapping shingles shed rain, resist wind, and give your home its color.
Layer 05
Attic ventilation
Intake vents low on the roof and exhaust vents at the ridge keep air moving through the attic. That lets heat and moisture out, so the shingles last longer and the deck stays dry.
Layer 06
Hip & ridge shingles
Thick cap shingles that seal the peaks and hips, where two slopes meet. Those joints catch the most wind, so the caps lock them down and cover the ridge vent.
